Senior Dog Photography in London: Aston's Clapham Common Photo Session

Couple cuddling their senior Pomeranian on Clapham Common

Some photo sessions stay with you long after the photos have been delivered. This was one of them. A few weeks ago I was contacted by a lovely couple who inquired about a senior dog photography session in London, with their beloved Pomeranian Aston. The couple was interested in having an outdoor lifestyle shoot in Clapham Common, during sunrise or sunset. They wanted natural outdoor photos of the three of them enjoying each other’s company, nothing too staged. His health had been deteriorating and they wished to capture his personality, energy and the special bond they shared while he was still feeling happy and enjoying life. They hoped to create photographs that would always remind them of Aston as he really was.

A natural dog and couple photoshoot at Clapham Common

We met on Clapham Common during a cloudy evening during the first of the heatwaves earlier this summer. Despite the weather, the conditions were perfect for a relaxed outdoor photography session.

I was instantly charmed by Aston. He was small but mighty! Full of character, incredibly sweet and friendly. I have to admit that I had always thought of Pomeranians as rather pampered little toy dogs, but Aston quickly proved me wrong! He was beautifully behaved, incredibly cuddly and very affectionate, while also being quite the poser in front of the camera. That combination made him a joy to photograph.

For a natural dog photography session, I don't want every photograph to look posed. Instead, I like to allow dogs to behave as naturally as possible and photograph the interactions between them and their people. For this session, that meant a mixture of walking photographs, relaxed portraits, cuddles and playful action shots.

Thank you again for capturing such beautiful memories of us with Aston. They mean so much to us. We can’t wait to share them with our family and friends and to treasure them forever.

Capturing Aston's personality

We began the shoot with a few sitting and walking photographs before giving Aston the opportunity to show off his athleticism and capture his more energetic side. I always try to include a mix of images during a pet photography session. Alongside beautiful dog portraits, I like to capture movement, personality and those little interactions that tell the story of a relationship. These are often the photographs that become the most meaningful as they capture something completely recognisable about your dog, and your interaction with them.

Golden hour on Clapham Common

Halfway through our session, the clouds began to part and we were treated to gorgeous soft light, the type photographers call “the golden hour”. It was the perfect way to finish our session, with everyone enjoying the evening and each other’s company. The changing light also gave us a lovely variety of photographs, from softer portraits to images of Aston moving through the grass with his owners.

Clapham Common is a wonderful setting for an outdoor family and pet photoshoot because there is plenty of space to move around and create a variety of images, even on busy evenings like this one.

A senior pet photography session to remember

This senior pet photo session was a joy to photograph from beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the couple and Aston, and unravelling different sides of his personality. More importantly, I feel so honored that my clients put their trust in me to capture their special bond with Aston, and I am glad that I was able to leave them with a treasured memory of their time together.

Since the session, I discovered that Aston had sadly passed away.

His owners were incredibly grateful that they had chosen to have their photographs taken when they did, while Aston was still himself, happy, affectionate and full of life. That is one of the reasons I believe photographs of senior pets are so important.

When we live with our dogs every day, it can be difficult to notice how quickly things change. We remember the walks, the cuddles, the funny habits and the companionship, but photographs allow us to hold onto those memories. An outdoor senior dog photography session doesn't have to be about saying goodbye. It can simply be about celebrating your dog exactly as they are today.

When should you book a senior dog photography session?

There isn’t a single right time to book one. Dogs are considered senior from about age 7 and above, depending on their size, breed and an individual’s health.

Some people contact me when they start noticing changes in their dog, like more sleep, reluctance to go up and down the stairs, or if they have had a health scare (like in the case of Aston). Others, on the other hand simply want to document this stage of their life.

If your dog is elderly, unwell or approaching the end of their life, I would generally recommend getting in touch sooner rather than later. The session can always be adapted to your dog's needs. We can take things slowly, include plenty of breaks and choose a location where your dog feels comfortable. For some dogs that might be their favourite park; for others, a garden or their own home may be a better choice. The most important thing is that your dog is comfortable and that the location feels like them.

End-of-life pet photography in London

I also offer end-of-life pet photography for families who want to document the relationship they share with a much-loved pet during the final stage of their life.

These sessions are, similar to senior dog photography sessions, gentle, relaxed and centered around your pet. I will meet you in your home, or your favourite park and photograph you and your dog interacting, cuddling and playing, as well as details like their paws, the way they look at you or their much loved places around the house.

If you are considering an end-of-life pet photography session, you don't need to know exactly what you want before getting in touch. I am always happy to have a conversation, answer questions and talk through what might work best for your dog and your family.

For additional information and support, The Tilly Project is an international organisation connecting pet owners with end-of-life pet photographers and providing resources around anticipatory grief and pet loss.

Remembering Aston

I feel incredibly honoured that Aston's owners trusted me to photograph this chapter of their lives together.

Aston was much more than a beautiful little Pomeranian in front of my camera. He was a much-loved member of the family, and these photographs are now a record of the personality, affection and joy that he brought to their lives. Below are a few more photographs from our session. I hope you enjoy going through them all as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Newborn Photoshoot with a Family Dog in Putney | London Newborn Photographer

Family walking with their dog and newborn baby in Putney, London

Newborn photo session are always so special. I feel so honoured when people invite me to document this most special time for any family, when they welcome a brand new family member into their family.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful newborn session in Putney, South West London, where the newest member of the family was introduced to their gentle and affectionate four-legged companion, who was adopted some two years prior. These early weeks pass so quickly (and in a blur), so it was a joy to document the quiet moments, tiny details and genuine connections that make this chapter so memorable.

A Relaxed Newborn Photoshoot at Home in Putney

For many families, home is the perfect location for newborn photography. It is the first place you bring your baby home after you’ve come back from the hospital, or in some cases, the place where your baby was born. It is where you and your baby feel most comfortable and where some of your first memories together are being made.

This session took place in a lovely Putney home filled with natural light and plenty of cosy corners. Rather than using elaborate props or complicated posing, the focus was on capturing authentic family moments. The parents cuddled their baby on the sofa (four legged baby as well), admired tiny fingers and toes, fed the baby when it came time for it and simply enjoyed being together.

Working in a familiar environment helps everyone relax, including older siblings and, of course, family pets.

Including Your Dog in Newborn Photographs

Family pets are just that - a part of the family and therefore an important part of the story. Many dogs (and cats) are wonderfully gentle and curious around their new human sibling. During this Putney newborn photo shoot, the family's dog stayed close by throughout the session, occasionally checking in on the baby and happily posing for a few photographs. In fact, he was star of the show!

There is never any pressure for pets to perform. I work discretely and allow them to be themselves and incorporate them naturally into the photographs whenever the opportunity arises. Occasionally I would encourage them to keep a pose with a treat (or two) but I would always be following their lead.

Capturing Natural Family Connections

My approach to newborn photography is centred around connection and rooted in storytelling. I want to tell a visual story of this precious time in your family’s journey, by observing and capturing moments which happen naturally and tell the story of your baby’s first few weeks. Newborn babies rarely follow a schedule, and that is completely fine. Sessions are relaxed and baby-led, with plenty of time for feeding, changing and cuddles. Some of the most meaningful photographs often happen when everyone relaxes in each other’s company and forget that I am there taking photographs.

  • A parent gently rocking their baby to sleep

  • A dog resting protectively nearby

  • Tiny yawns and stretches

  • Proud smiles exchanged across the room

  • Quiet moments of wonder as families settle into life with a newborn

These are the memories that families often treasure most years later.

Why Putney Is Perfect for Family Photography

Putney is one of my favourite areas of South West London for family photography. With its beautiful residential streets, nearby green spaces, the River Thames and abundance of natural light-filled homes, it provides a wonderful backdrop for relaxed newborn sessions.

Many families choose to keep the entire session indoors, while others like to include a short walk outside if the weather is suitable. This creates a lovely variety of images and helps tell the full story of life during those precious early weeks. During this particular shoot, it rained heavily when we started but we managed to go out during a break in clouds and change the scenery for the second half of the shoot.

Timeless Newborn Photography That Includes the Whole Family

When families look back on their photographs, they often tell me how grateful they are that everyone was included. For me, newborn photography is not only about the baby. It is about the love and relationships that surround them from the very beginning. Proud parents. Loving grandparents. The smiles that greet them. The family dog who quickly becomes their loyal companion. These connections are what transform photographs into cherished family heirlooms.

What This Putney Newborn Session Was Really Like

This particular baby was just three weeks old, and their mixed breed family dog was a bit anxious around me at first, but then warmed up and remained wonderfully calm throughout the session. The baby was tiny, so so gorgeous, calm and curious about the world around her. We began the session at home where the natural light was beautiful. We took a break then headed off outside for a walk and a few natural outdoor newborn and dog shots around the neighbourhood.

Thank you so much for all the photos, they’re absolutely perfect. Thanks again for such a wonderful experience and for capturing our little family so beautifully. We know these are photos we’ll treasure for many years to come.

Planning a Newborn Photoshoot with Your Dog

One of the questions I am asked most often is whether family dogs can be included in a newborn photoshoot. The answer is almost always yes. Dogs are an important part of the family, and including them in your photographs helps tell the complete story of this special chapter in your lives.

When Should You Book?

The best time to book your newborn photography session is during pregnancy, ideally after your 20-week scan. This allows plenty of time to reserve space in my diary around your due date. Since babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, I keep flexibility around booked due dates and schedule the actual session once your baby has arrived.

While many families choose to have their newborn photographs taken within the first two weeks after birth, beautiful and meaningful images can be created at any stage during the first few months.

How Are Dogs Included in the Session?

Every dog is different, and I always work around their personality and comfort level. Some dogs are naturally calm and enjoy lying beside the baby, while others prefer to stay close to their owners and observe from a distance. Both approaches can result in beautiful photographs.

Rather than forcing poses, I incorporate pets naturally into the session. This might include family cuddles on the sofa, gentle interactions between the dog and baby, a walk outdoors, or simply capturing your dog relaxing nearby while you spend time with your newborn.

The aim is always to create photographs that feel genuine and reflect your family's real relationships.

Safety Always Comes First

Your baby's safety and your dog's wellbeing are my highest priorities throughout the session. Newborns and dogs are never left unattended together, and I never ask pets to do anything that makes them uncomfortable or stressed.

Many of the photographs that appear effortless are carefully planned and taken with safety in mind. Sometimes a parent may be positioned just outside the frame, or images may be created in a way that ensures everyone remains comfortable and secure throughout.

A relaxed environment helps both babies and dogs feel at ease, resulting in natural and authentic photographs.

What If My Dog Is Energetic?

Please don't worry if your dog is young, excitable or full of energy. This is incredibly common, and I have photographed many lively dogs over the years.

Often, it helps to take your dog for a walk before the session begins. We can also start by allowing them time to become familiar with me and my camera equipment. There is no expectation that your dog will sit perfectly still or perform on command.

Some of the most memorable images come from spontaneous moments and playful interactions. Patience, flexibility and a sense of humour are often all that is needed.

What Should We Bring?

One of the benefits of an at-home newborn session is that you already have almost everything you need. Your baby's favourite blankets, nursery, cuddly toys and meaningful family items can all help make the photographs more personal.

If your dog has a favourite toy, blanket or treats, it can be helpful to keep these nearby. Treats can be particularly useful for encouraging attention during family portraits.

What Should We Wear?

Soft, neutral colours tend to photograph beautifully and create a timeless look that won't date. Creams, soft greys, muted blues, earthy tones and gentle pastels work particularly well.

Try to avoid large logos, bold patterns and bright neon colours, which can distract from the connection between family members.

Most importantly, choose clothing that feels comfortable and allows you to relax. The focus of the session is not perfect outfits, but the love, connection and excitement that come with welcoming a new baby into the family—including the four-legged members too.

How long does a newborn session last?

Most sessions last between two and three hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, cuddling and settling your baby.

Can nervous dogs be included in family photographs?

Absolutely. We will work around your dog’s needs. For example, if you dog is nervous when people come into your home, we can meet outside first, then go back home for some cosy homey shots. We can arrange the photo session so that the first half hour we dedicate towards your dog getting used to me and settling in.

End-of-life dog photography in London & Surrey | Preserving Precious Memories

Owners cuddling their senior dog during a relaxed pet photography session focused on preserving meaningful memories.

End-of-life pet photography offers families a gentle way to preserve meaningful memories with a beloved companion during their final chapter. These sessions focus on love, connection and the everyday moments that often become the most treasured memories. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a family in South London following their dog's terminal diagnosis.

Why I Offer End-of-Life Pet Photography

A few years ago I heard of The Tilly Project, a non-profit organisation dedicated at connecting pet owners with end-of-life pet photographers, while also providing resources and support around pet bereavement. The thought of giving the gift of photographs to pet owners who are about to lose their beloved pet really moved me and I instantly wanted to be a part of something so meaningful.

A Gentle End-of-Life Dog Photography Session in South London

Several weeks ago I received a thoughtful email from a couple whose Yorkshire Terrier cross had recently received an unexpected terminal diagnosis. They wanted to capture a few quiet photographs together at home, as well as in their favourite local park in South London, a place filled with familiar walks, routines and memories.

Capturing Meaningful Moments at Home

We started the session in the kitchen, where the natural light was warm and beautiful, and we began with a portrait of everyone together. These first few moments are often gentle and emotional, but they also become surprisingly comforting. Rather than focusing on posing, I try to create space for people to simply spend time together naturally. We then moved into the living room to capture a moment of true companionship. While their owner plays the piano, the two dogs settle next to her, lay by her feet and often fall asleep. This was one of the most touching moments during the photo session, the music touched everyone deeply (including the dogs) and made everyone feel emotional (including me).

Photographing the Special Bond Between Dogs and Their People

One of the things I love most about end-of-life pet photography is documenting the ordinary moments that families never want to forget: the way a dog rests beside someone they love, the quiet companionship in a familiar room, cuddles, or the comfort of routines that have become part of daily life over many years. In this case, it was cuddles on the sofa and a relaxation session on the bed. At home dog photography at its best!

A Walk in the Favourite Park

After capturing a few more moments at home, we headed to their favourite park in South London. The atmosphere immediately became lighter and more playful. Their dog happily explored familiar paths, enjoyed bouncing in the grass, and spent time close to the people she loves most. These outdoor moments brought balance to the session. Along with heavier feelings of sadness and grief, there was also joy, excitement and playfulness.

Photographing sessions like this is an incredible privilege and reminder of how deeply pets shape our lives and families. I am always grateful to the people who trust me during such a vulnerable and meaningful chapter of their lives.

If you are looking for end-of-life dog photography or senior dog photography in London or Surrey, or simply want to preserve honest photographs with your pet while time still allows, please feel free to get in touch. These sessions are always led gently, without pressure, and entirely at your pet’s pace.

Back Home For A Pamper Sesh

It was a hot day, we came back home from the park and the dogs enjoyed a lovely cool shower. It was the perfect end to a day filled with joy, laughter, tears, cuddles, playing in the park (and the piano), and all the little moments in between. I said goodbye having made a couple of new friends, feeling content and pleased that I preserved these special memories for my clients.

What Makes End-of-Life Pet Photography So Meaningful?

End-of-life dog photography sessions are never only about saying goodbye. They are about celebrating love, companionship and the bond people share with their pets. They are about celebrating a dog’s life and the relationship each individual family member has with the dog. They preserve memories that often become even more valuable in the weeks, months and years that follow.

Dog-Friendly Maternity Photoshoot at Isabella Plantation, Richmond Park

Isabella Plantation: The Perfect Spot for a Maternity Photoshoot

Isabella plantation in Richmond park is one of my favourite places in the world. It is a beautiful woodland garden created in the 1830s, best known for its azaelias that run all along the plantation, lining the streams and ponds of this Victorian garden. Every spring, the garden transforms into a breathtaking sea of colour, making it one of the most beautiful locations for outdoor maternity photography in London.

Back in the day when I lived in Richmond, I used to visit the plantation several times a week during the azalea and rhododendron flowering season just to be there ‘at the peak’ of flowering. I would spend evenings wandering around, soaking in the sights and smells (in particular of the sweet smelling rhododendron “King George”) and practice my photography skills on some very fast moving mandarin ducklings.

Naturally, I was delighted when my clients and I agreed on meeting in Isabella Plantation for their dog-friendly maternity photo session.

A Dog-Friendly Maternity Session in Richmond Park

We began chatting and very soon found that we have more in common than love for nature and dogs. We are both scientists by training, and during my PhD studies I actually worked at the same institute where my client now works. It was lovely to discover shared experiences, mutual connections, and familiar names from our scientific backgrounds. Those unexpected moments of connection make photography sessions even more meaningful. Building genuine rapport helps people feel relaxed in front of the camera, creating natural and authentic photographs.

Including a dog in a maternity photo session adds a wonderful energy to the session. The focus shifts from photographing the couple (and the bump) to photographing a family, and the connection they share together. For more information about family photography sessions, please visit my family photography page.

Dogs also bring spontaneity and laughter. Whether jumping up unexpectedly, refusing instructions, or racing around the gardens, they help create relaxed, candid moments that feel genuine and timeless.

Why Isabella Plantation is Perfect for Spring Photography

Spring is a wonderful time at Isabella plantation. The flowering azaleas and rhododendrons create endless colourful backdrops, while the soft woodland light is ideal for natural, flattering portraits.

We began the session at Reflection Pond, famous for the vibrant wall of azaleas mirrored beautifully on the water’s surface. From there, we followed the winding streams and explored quieter corners of the plantation to capture relaxed family portraits amongst the flowers.

Although Isabella Plantation has become increasingly popular in recent years, there are still plenty of peaceful spots tucked away from the main paths. These quieter areas were perfect for capturing candid moments and playful action shots.

Some of my favourite photographs from the session came from these unposed moments, natural interactions, laughter, movement, and connection that feel meaningful and real.

What to Wear for a Spring Maternity Photoshoot

Soft neutral tones, flowing dresses, knitwear, and earthy colours work beautifully against the vibrant spring blooms at Isabella Plantation. Please avoid strong patterns, and opt for something plain. Comfortable footwear is also recommended, as some woodland paths can be uneven.

For dog-friendly sessions, you can coordinate colours between outfits and accessories can help create a cohesive look in your final gallery.

Best Time of Year for Isabella Plantation Photography

The best time to photograph at Isabella Plantation is typically between late April and mid-May, when the azaleas and rhododendrons are in full bloom. Depending on what the winter was like (cold and wet or mild and dry), this may vary a little but generally from mid-April to mid-May there will be some camelias, azaleas or rhododendrons in bloom. Early mornings are ideal for softer light and weekday sessions for fewer visitors.

Intimate Guildford Register Office Wedding | Surrey Wedding Photographer

This intimate Guildford Register Office wedding in Surrey began with a civil ceremony at Artington House before continuing with a relaxed wedding reception at the couple's home in Dunsfold. As a Surrey and Guildford wedding photographer, I photographed the day in a natural, documentary style, capturing the ceremony, family celebrations and relaxed couple portraits in the Surrey countryside.

For couples planning a small or intimate wedding in Guildford, this wedding is a lovely example of just how special a small wedding can feel, without compromising the atmosphere or the style.

A Beautiful Intimate Ceremony at Artington House (Guildford Register Office)

Guildford Register Office (Artington House) is a wonderful choice for couples planning a smaller civil ceremony in Surrey. Its elegant, light-filled rooms create a warm and personal atmosphere, perfect for exchanging vows, surrounded by close family and friends.

This ceremony was filled with genuine emotion, from the anticipation before walking in, to the laughter and happy tears during the vows, and that just-married moment as the couple stepped outside together. The most touching (and funny!) moment was a pre-recorded message delivered by the bride’s grand-mother, who unfortunately couldn’t be present at the ceremony. The message brought laughter, joy, tears and lots of love, and made it for a very personal and special touch to the ceremony.

Natural, Candid Wedding Photography in Surrey

One of the most special things about an intimate wedding is the ability to make genuine connections with the wedding party. With a smaller guest list, there is more time for meaningful interactions, real conversations and the in-between moments that make the day unique. From quiet glances during the ceremony to private laughs, to joyful confetti celebrations outside, the focus was on documentary-style storytelling.

A Relaxed At-Home Wedding Reception in Dunsfold, Surrey

After the ceremony, the couple enjoyed an elegant, chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce ride home to the picturesque village of Dunsfold, Surrey. It was lovely to join the couple and their family at home, where everyone felt relaxed and joyful. There was plenty of time for photo opportunities around the house for couple portraits. Nobody felt rushed or in need to get back to the wedding party quickly; everyone was a stone throw away enjoying a glass of bubbly while we created romantic, sun-kissed portraits backed by beautiful Surrey countryside.

Why consider a Home Wedding Reception in Surrey?

At-home weddings are becoming increasingly popular, especially for couples getting married in the countryside, who are seeking a non-traditional, flexible timeline and have space to host a wedding reception at home. Some of the benefits include:

  • A familiar and meaningful setting. Celebrating your love that holds personal history.

  • Creative Freedom. Including thoughtful details into the design of your reception venue.

  • A relaxed, non-traditional atmosphere. A relaxed garden gathering that feels like a true celebration of family.

  • More time to spend with guests

In a beautiful Surrey village like Dunsfold, a home wedding reception can feel both countryside-inspired and deeply personal.

Planning Your Own Guildford Register Office Wedding

If you are considering getting married at Guildford Register Office, it’s a fantastic option for a simple and elegant ceremony. Pairing it with a home reception—like this one in Dunsfold—creates the perfect balance between structure and freedom.

As a Surrey wedding photographer, I love documenting these kinds of days, where the focus is on people, atmosphere, and real moments rather than rigid timelines.

Guildford Register Office Wedding: Important 2026 Update: Register office ceremonies at the Guildford Harbour Hotel

Capturing the Magic: An 80s-Themed 40th Birthday at Somersbury Barn, Surrey

A night shot of Somersbury bark, a wedding and private event hire in Ewhurst Surrey

As a Surrey wedding and event photographer, there is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a historic barn brought to life by a milestone celebration. Recently, I had the pleasure of documenting a vibrant 40th birthday party at the stunning Somersbury Barn in Ewhurst, Surrey.

Nestled in the tranquil Surrey Hills countryside, this venue offers the perfect blend of rustic charm and refined elegance, making it a premier choice for those seeking a bespoke private event or a Surrey barn wedding.

A Bespoke Birthday Party at an ancient barn & Victorian glasshouse in the heart of Surrey

This special event wasn’t just a party; it was a curated journey back to the 80s, designed with love by a sister who wanted to give a gift of cherished memories to her younger sibling. Themed to Jilly Cooper’s bestselling novel “Rivals”, and recently brought to life by Disney Plus UK’s TV adaptation of the same novel, the party was both a visual feast and a travel back in time to the colourful 80s.

As an event photographer in Surrey, my goal is always to capture the authentic energy of the room. Despite the challenges of an indoor night-time shoot, the setting was breathtaking. I utilised the Canon R5 mirrorless system, which features an incredibly sensitive sensor, allowing me to preserve the moody, ambient atmosphere of the barn while ensuring every detail and interaction remained crisp.

The Art of Documentary Photography

My brief for the night focused on documentary-style imagery. I started with a few shots of the barn itself from the outside and then moved inside the barn where the guests were arriving. The only lighting inside the barn were fairly lights so I pushed my camera to the limits, moving from zoomed in images of people mingling and having a good time, to wide angle stills, to slow shutter speed to capture a bit of movement, as well as freezing the moments with the use of on camera flash.

Expert Catering at Somersbuty Barn

No high-society 80s affair is complete without a decadent spread. The catering at this Somersbury Barn celebration was nothing short of legendary. To match the sophisticated Rivals theme, the food needed to be as photogenic as the guests. Clarissa Rudd catering delivered a bit of luxury for the guests, serving an array of exquisite canapés that perfectly complemented the rustic elegance of the ancient barn.

The showstopper, however, was a hyper-realistic sugar piece of art that left everyone wondering where the real cake was! Domino Purchas Cakes created the most incredible, hyper-realistic, Rivals-inspired masterpiece that sat at the heart of the venue. Whether it was the intricate details of the book lettering or a glistening foam inside the coffee mug, the cake was a centerpiece designed for the spotlight. For any Surrey event photographer, capturing the details of the amazing food on offer was really a dream.

From vibrant, seasonal canapés to refined late-night bites, the menu provided so many photographic opportunities for documentary event & wedding photography, with every plate styled to perfection against the backdrop of Surrey’s most picturesque countryside barn. Following the initial meet and green in the barn, it was time to move into the warm light of the Victorian glasshouse.

An Intimate Celebration in Somersbury Barn Glasshouse

From the spacious and high-beamed barn, we moved into the intimate Victorian glasshouse in preparation for the main meal. The decor was a masterclass in event styling, featuring dark pink floral themes and candlelit ambiance creating a warm, inviting space for an evening meal.

As Surrey wedding and event photographer, I make it a priority to document these intricate details, as they represent the hard work of the suppliers and the vision of the host. After capturing everyone entering the glass house, mingling, getting themselves settled and having their food served, I said my goodbyes and left everyone to enjoy the rest of the party (and that stunning cake!).

Thank you so much Mina - you have done an excellent job!! They (the photos) are great.
— Melissa

Why Family Photography is the Ultimate Mother’s Day Present

Family photography is not only about taking family portraits. It is so much more. Family photography is about capturing a moment in time, documenting connections between your family members (and your pets), and cherishing a moment in time which you can share with family members in years to come and pass down generations.

A Relaxed Experience in Your Favourite London & Surrey Locations

I offer relaxed family photography that takes place where your family feels most at home. I want to give you an opportunity to spend time together to slow down, connect and enjoy being in each other’s company. Fun for the Whole Family (Including the Kids & Dogs!)

The photo session itself is relaxed, easy going and fun. My goal to make everyone feel comfortable, and to take natural, genuine photos of a family having a good time. I will normally encourage your children to show me what their interests are, engage them in a game of hide-and-seek or ask them to run, jump or do cartwheels. I will offer ideas, gentile guidance and background suggestions but otherwise leave you to interact, play and enjoy each other’s company. Autumn Family Photo Session in Regents Park | Natural Family Photography in London

Autumn Family Photoshoot in London’s Regent’s Park

There is a particular stillness to London in the autumn. The sun sits lower in the sky, casting a soft light that transforms familiar parks into something ethereal. For a family photographer, it is arguably the most rewarding season; the palette is naturally warm, and the air has a crispness that keeps everyone moving and engaged.

Last season was particularly busy with family photoshoots and I'm only now finding the time to sit back, reflect and write about some of the experiences. I have been so lucky to work with many families across London and Surrey. One of the photo sessions that stands out was of a sweet family of three who who was a joy to work with. They contacted me through my website and after a few emails exchanging ideas on where to meet, we finally settled on Regent’s Park. I had the pleasure of photographing in Regent’s Park on a few occasions. While it is one of London's most iconic and busiest green spaces, the park always holds secret pockets of quiet for those willing to wander.

Finding the Rhythm of the Family

I like to start family photoshoots with a together portrait. By capturing this important shot early on, the pressure evaporates. Once we have that classic image, we can move into the true heart of the session: the candid, unposed moments that define a family’s dynamic. So, after the initial few shots, I tend to have a little chat with my clients, try to get to know them better. I am always surprised to find that even after a few minutes chatting to people, a connection is formed which transforms people’s body language from reserved to relaxed, which in turn makes for more natural looking photos.

So, after a little bit of a wait to let the crowds clear, we set the scene for a simple together photograph of all the family together. We escaped the main thoroughfares for a path lined with trees. I asked the family to simply walk together, and almost instantly, their little girl decided it was time for a game of swing between her parents' arms. This is where the magic happens. Not in a forced pose, but in the instinctive giggles and the way a child looks up at her parents when she feels most safe. This evoked candid family moments perfect for natural family photography.

Capturing Connection Through Play

A nearby bench soon became an irresistible climbing frame. Before long, everyone was sitting close together, chatting and cuddling. Their daughter had collected a few flowers and proudly showed them to her parents. I stayed back, letting the moment unfold, capturing those quiet, unguarded interactions, the kind of images that tell a story long after the session ends.

We continued wandering through the park after this and found a quiet wooded area bursting with colour. It was a hazel grove dressed in greenish yellow autumn attire, a fantastic setting! We settled here for a little while, enjoying the dappled light and the warm colours of the leaves taking individual portraits with each parent and their daughter, and playing a few games. The favourite game being spinning around!

A Discovery in the Rose Garden

Even in late November, Regent’s Park had surprises in store. We stumbled upon a rose garden still in bloom. Seeing a child discover a hidden treasure like a late-season blossom is a storytelling dream. She moved instinctively through the rows, smelling the flowers and glancing back at her parents with pure wonder. By using a long lens and positioning myself so the sun hit from behind (backlighting), she appeared to almost glow against the greenery.

Light, Water, and Reflections

Our walk took us past a fountain where the light was performing a spectacular show. The water droplets were catching the sun, creating a shimmering, backlit curtain. I asked the family to simply observe the water, the girl to stand on the edge and watch the movement. The resulting frames captured a genuine sense of amazement and wonder.

Family pausing by a fountain during Regent’s Park photoshoot

Because it had rained the day before, the park was full of mirrors. Near a beautifully curved bridge, I used a large puddle to capture a creative reflection portrait of the daughter. It’s these artistic touches that turn a standard photo session into a collection of unique pieces of art. I then asked her parents to join her, and captured them all chatting and walking across the bridge. I think these are some of my favorite photographs from the shoot.

Relaxed Family Photography in London & Surrey

We concluded our morning in and around the Japanese Garden, framed by the intricate wooden bridge and the architectural lines of the wisteria. But not before a quick game of hide-and-seek!

My approach to family photography is tailored towards each family I work with. I try to work with natural rhythms of the family dynamic. I believe in setting a beautiful scene, finding the best light, and then letting your family’s story unfold naturally.

Winter Family Photography in Wimbledon Common | London Family Photographer

The winter family photo sessions have started early this year, and we’ve had some amazing winter light to enjoy taking family portraits in. My first winter family photoshoot this season has been a lovely family of three, with whom I arranged to meet in Wimbledon Common, one of their local London parks. They wanted natural, relaxed family portraits, outdoors, in one of their favourite parks.

We met on a crisp winter morning, wrapped up in layers. The weather was overcast, with a forecast of rain later that afternoon. However, with fast moving clouds, there was also a possibility of sunshine, perfect for outdoor family portraits.

One of The Best London Parks For Family Photography

Wimbledon Common has quickly become one of my favourite locations for family photography in London. It is vast, natural and wonderfully varied, ideal for families who want photos that feel relaxed and natural, rather than posed.

I first discovered Wimbledon Common years ago, but fell in love with it last year while photographing a family with their newborn baby and dog. During that particular photo session, I discovered some lovely little nooks on the common. Since then, I keep finding new spaces that work beautifully for family photo sessions: open woodland paths, soft grassy clearings, and gentle textures that let families be themselves.

For anyone looking for outdoor family photography in South West London, natural family photos and locations that look natural, feel calm and child-friendly, Wimbledon Common is always a wonderful choice.

Why Winter Is a Beautiful Time for Family Photos

Winter family photo sessions are often underestimated, but to me, winter is one of the lovelies times of year to photograph families in. The winter light is soft and directional, creating flattering tones and gentle contrast. Without the distractions of bright foliage, the focus naturally shifts to connection, movement, and emotion. The bright colours of winter woollies create a striking contrast against the soft, subdued tones of the winter landscape. Children can explore freely, parents can slow down, and the resulting images feel honest and timeless.

Winter photography sessions are perfect if you love:

  • Being outdoors

  • Misty mornings and crisp sunny days

  • Soft light and subdued tones

  • Neutral, earthy colour palettes

  • Layered outfits and natural textures

And yes, children almost always forget about the cold once they start exploring!

A Relaxed Family Photo Session Experience

This session was all about observing the family interact and capturing the connection, little smiles and genuine moments. No pressure or expectation to perform, no stiff posing, just gentle guidance and space to connect and explore.

We wandered, chatted, paused when the light felt right, and let moments happen naturally. These are the sessions where children feel safe to be themselves, parents relax into the experience, and the images tell a story that feels true to real life.

If you are considering a family photoshoot in Wimbledon Common, winter is a beautiful and often quieter time to do it. I am always happy to offer guidance, to choose the best meeting spot on the common and to plan a session that works around young children and your schedule.
